Pacific Halibut Now Open Daily

Pacific halibut is now open daily in the Central Oregon Coast subarea, and the early trips have been nothing short of fantastic! The first outings of the season have produced near-limits of halibut, along with plenty of bonus fish. It’s been a great start for what’s sure to be a long season.

A halibut trip with Yaquina Bay Charters is a full-day offshore adventure, running 20-30 miles out and lasting 12 hours or until limited out. In addition to your limit of 2 halibut per person, it’s pretty common to bring home extra catches like lingcod and canary rockfish as bonus fish. To top it off, every trip includes crabbing for fresh Dungeness crab—making for a seriously rewarding day on the water.

At $375 per person, everything you need for a successful day is included. We provide all bait and tackle, though you’re welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer. Charter guests also receive a complimentary parking pass, so there’s no need to worry about parking fees, and it’s just a short, easy walk from the lot to the boats.

All you need to take care of beforehand is your fishing license, halibut tag, and ocean endorsement—and if you plan to keep crab, a shellfish license as well. Don’t worry if you don’t have them yet; licenses are available at the Newport Marina Store during check-in. A One Day license covering everything you need is $33 with the ocean endorsement, but annual licenses and longer duration licenses for 2-7 days are also available.

After your trip, fish cleaning services are conveniently available right by the dock, typically charging about $0.40 per pound for filleting and $2 per crab for cleaning and cooking. Vacuum packing and short-term freezing are also available at the Newport Marina Store, so you can head home from your vacation with your catch ready to enjoy.

With halibut fishing off to such a strong start, weekend dates are filling quickly for May and June. If you’ve been thinking about getting out on the ocean and loading up on some of the best fish the Pacific has to offer, now’s the time to plan your trip and reserve your dates.
