The Crackerjack took out a private party of 9 yesterday and the boys brought back 48 fish! Really nice grade albacore, average about 20 pounds, some much bigger ones in there too. Capt. Jack was out between 40 and 45 miles. Looking forward to a little breather today and the next couple with just bottom fishing and then back on Tuna on Wednesday.
We have 6 spots available THIS WEDNESDAY August 11th! Also there are 3 spots open on Tuesday the 17th and 2 spots open on Friday the 20th if you want to get out there and catch your dinner!
Well the North wind has made things kind of difficult for the last couple weeks.
The tuna have moved offshore for now but should come back close as soon as the North wind stops blowing so hard. It may be a week or so but we'll keep our eyes on the warm water and let you know.
The salmon fishing has been slow but some boats have started finding fish. A mix of Coho and Chinook have been showing up Northwest of Newport. We'll know more after monday.
Bottom fishing has slowed down a little bit also because of the cool water being stirred up by the Northwest wind. The Lingcod are still biting and we caught several nice ones today.
Cabezon closes tonight at midnight and also water beyond twenty fathoms closes to bottom fishing. That doesn't impact us to much, we still have tons of places to fish out of Newport.
Cross your fingers for the wind to slow down!
We've been asked to give an update on how the Salmon season is progressing, and I apologize for not giving more information sooner! Unfortunately the reason we haven't said much about it is because there isn't much happening…
As of July 11th ODFW estimates that only 5.4% of the Coho quota has been taken. The average number of salmon caught per angler in Newport from June 26-July 11 is less than 0.10… the best average on the Oregon coast has been out of Garibali where they have estimated an average catch of 0.52 salmon per angler. This information comes from the salmon catch estimated and statistics page on the ODFW website. http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/Salmon.
The encouraging news is that it looks like salmon catches down south have increased over the initial two weeks of the season, which means the fish are probably working their way up from the south by now. Hopefully they will really start to fill in down there and come all they way up to us within the next few weeks so we have some nice August salmon (and good-sized ones!) to chase.
I promise as soon as we start seeing them or hearing of some improved catches we will let you know!
Saturday was the opening day for Coho retention for the Central Oregon Coast and it looks like everyone in the port had a hard day fishing for them. We caught 1, lost 3, and released 3 or 4 natives and that sounded like it was one of the better trips for all the charters. We had much better luck at bottom fishing for the rest of the weekend, but Capt. Jack is going to take more shots at Salmon later in the week and has a good feeling we'll have better luck. At this point we are recommending full day Salmon trips rather than half days to improve catches, but it's always up to the customer.
Bottom fishing is doing well, and we've been catching a good mix of fish. Yesterday our boys brought in some quillbacks, brown rocks, lings, kelp greenlings, blue rocks and blacks, so it was neat to see the assortment. Crabbing is also finally improving, so we're ready to start dropping pots again on the way out to fish.
Aaaaaaaaaand what everyone has been waiting for…. we've heard reports of the first sport fleet caught tuna!!! About 85 miles out a boat or two got into them. We need them to be no further out that 60 miles to take a 12 hour trip, so in a couple weeks they should be there! We'll be watching the warm water currents and keep you all posted. We have lots of full tuna trips on weekends, so remember if you're looking to accomodate a large group you might want to consider trying weekdays unless you're booking at least a month in advance!
Hope you're all as excited as we are for the upcoming tuna season!
P.S. this kid was a pro at pulling up crab pots and he caught a nice ling cod too! Way to go!
June 17th- 19th has been opened by fish and wildlife to halibut fishing. We're booking trips now. We have room on all three days but call soon if you want to go out Saturday, things are filling up.
Its the perfect present for dad!
